EUFOR Launches a Bilingual Knowledge Platform on Forest Policy and Ukraine’s Recovery

Published: September 25, 2026

The EUFOR project has launched an open Knowledge Platform offering analytical content on EU forest policy, sustainable forest management, biodiversity protection and the recovery of war-damaged territories.

The platform connects scientific evidence, European policy documents and practical recommendations. It serves students, educators, researchers, forestry professionals, local communities, public authorities and environmental organisations. All core materials will be available in Ukrainian and English.

The first resources are now available

Forest Policy in Ukraine and the EU: From Gaps to Aligned Solutions

The first Policy Report compares Ukrainian and EU approaches to forest governance. It examines strategic planning, biodiversity protection, climate resilience, monitoring and stakeholder participation. The report identifies clear priorities for Ukraine: aligning legislation and practice with EU standards, developing transparent monitoring, and adopting management approaches that balance the environmental, social and economic functions of forests.

Ukraine’s Forests after 2022: Loss, Evidence and Resilient Recovery

The first EUFOR Evidence & Action Brief reviews the available evidence on the impact of the full-scale war on Ukraine’s forests. It distinguishes between burned land, tree-cover loss, damaged stands, explosive-contaminated forests and permanent deforestation. The brief proposes a practical recovery sequence: safety assessment, geospatial monitoring, ecological diagnosis, selection of the appropriate restoration method, and long-term evaluation aligned with EU guidance.

Three knowledge formats

The platform will develop through three connected content streams.

Policy Reports

Policy Reports will compare Ukrainian and EU policies and practices, identify regulatory and institutional gaps, and propose evidence-based directions for reform. Future topics will cover the EU Forest Strategy for 2030, the EU Nature Restoration Regulation, biodiversity governance, climate adaptation and European approaches to forest monitoring.

Evidence & Action Briefs

These concise materials will translate complex evidence and policy documents into practical options. Each brief will define a problem, assess the available evidence, explain data limitations and recommend specific actions for public authorities, forest managers, communities, educators and environmental professionals.

Research Insights

Research Insights will present current scientific findings, data, methods and professional debates in an accessible format. They will explain how research on remote sensing, GIS, ecological restoration, closer-to-nature forestry, climate resilience and land recovery can inform decisions in Ukraine. Each article will link to original sources and relevant scientific publications, allowing readers to verify the evidence and explore the subject further.

The platform will also feature infographics, videos, applied case studies, educational resources and outputs from EUFOR events. This structure will give readers several entry points, ranging from a concise explanation of an issue to detailed analysis and practical recommendations.
