About the EUFOR Project

EUFOR – “EU Green Deal Forestry for Ukraine: EU Forest Strategy, Nature Restoration, and Post-War Land Recovery” is an Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Module implemented by Sumy National Agrarian University.

The project integrates European Union policies and practices on forests, biodiversity and nature restoration into higher education, research and public dialogue in Ukraine. EUFOR responds to the effects of the war on Ukrainian forests and land, including ecosystem degradation, territorial contamination, biodiversity loss and the growing need for effective environmental recovery.

EUFOR combines teaching, professional training, applied research and stakeholder engagement. Its content is based on the European Green Deal, the EU Forest Strategy for 2030, the EU Biodiversity Strategy and the European nature restoration agenda. The project gives particular attention to the practical use of these policies in Ukraine’s post-war recovery and European integration.

Main Aim

EUFOR aims to establish a lasting educational and research foundation for applying EU policies on sustainable forest management, biodiversity protection, ecosystem restoration and the rehabilitation of war-affected territories in Ukraine.

Project Objectives

EUFOR will:

  • develop, deliver and institutionalise two new Bachelor-level courses;
  • strengthen students’ knowledge and practical skills in EU environmental governance, sustainable forestry, climate resilience and nature restoration;
  • build the professional capacity of community representatives, businesses, public authorities and forestry and agricultural professionals;
  • conduct applied research on adapting EU forestry and environmental policies to Ukraine’s recovery needs;
  • improve public understanding of EU policies, standards and values;
  • provide open educational, research and policy-oriented resources in Ukrainian and English;
  • secure the continued use of project results after the implementation period.

The course will cover the EU Forest Strategy for 2030, biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, sustainable forest management, EU environmental governance and the application of European approaches in Ukraine.

“Renaturalisation of Devastated Territories in Ukraine Using EU Forestry-Based Methods”

The course will address reforestation, ecosystem restoration, soil rehabilitation, climate resilience and EU-based approaches to the recovery of territories damaged by the war.

Teaching will combine lectures, seminars, case studies, project assignments and practical exercises. The EUFOR team will deliver 350 teaching hours over the three-year implementation period.

Professional Training and Summer School

EUFOR will organise the professional training course “Renaturalisation of Devastated Territories in Ukraine: EU Forestry Methods for Recovery” for community leaders, business representatives, public authorities and professionals from the forestry and agricultural sectors.

The Summer School “European Strategies for Forest and Land Recovery in Post-War Ukraine” will provide advanced training on EU policies, ecosystem restoration, sustainable forest management and modern approaches to natural resource governance.

Research and Dissemination

EUFOR connects teaching with applied research on EU forest governance, sustainable forest management, land rehabilitation, biodiversity protection and post-war ecological recovery.

Research findings will be published in academic articles and presented at academic and public events. The bilingual project website will provide open access to project news, teaching materials, research findings, publications, videos, infographics and policy-oriented content.

Target Groups

EUFOR addresses:

  • students and academic staff;
  • researchers and early-career scholars;
  • forestry, environmental and agricultural professionals;
  • representatives of territorial communities;

Sustainability

The two courses will remain part of the University’s educational provision, while teaching and research materials will continue to support students, academics and practitioners. The project website will preserve public access to EUFOR results. Cooperation with communities, professionals and public authorities will provide a basis for further educational, research and practical initiatives.
