EUFOR Scores 88 out of 100: Sumy National Agrarian University to Advance EU Approaches to Forest and Land Recovery in Ukraine

Published: September 25, 2026

Sumy National Agrarian University is launching EUFOR – “EU Green Deal Forestry for Ukraine: EU Forest Strategy, Nature Restoration, and Post-War Land Recovery.” The project received 88 out of 100 points in the Erasmus+ expert evaluation and was selected for support under Jean Monnet Actions in Higher Education.

EUFOR addresses one of Ukraine’s most urgent challenges: the extensive damage to forests, soils and natural ecosystems caused by the war. It will turn European Union policies into practical knowledge, educational solutions and evidence-based guidance for post-war territorial recovery.

Strong European Expert Assessment

According to the Evaluation Summary Report, EUFOR received:

  • 23 out of 25 points for relevance;
  • 22.5 out of 25 points for the quality of project design and implementation;
  • 21 out of 25 points for the quality of the team and cooperation arrangements;
  • 21.5 out of 25 points for impact.

The final score of 88 points was well above the required threshold of 70. The assessment confirmed the project’s strong relevance, sound design, appropriate implementation measures and potential to strengthen education, research and public dialogue on EU policies.

European Solutions for Ukraine’s Recovery

EUFOR will integrate the European Green Deal, the EU Forest Strategy for 2030, the EU Biodiversity Strategy and the European nature restoration agenda into higher education and applied research in Ukraine.

The project will develop and deliver two new Bachelor-level courses:

  • “Implementation of the EU Forest Strategy in the Forest Policy of Ukraine”;
  • “Renaturalisation of Devastated Territories in Ukraine Using EU Forestry-Based Methods.”

The courses will equip students with knowledge of sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, soil rehabilitation and the recovery of war-damaged territories.

Education, Research and Practical Action

Over three years, the EUFOR team will deliver 350 teaching hours. The academic programme will be complemented by professional training, a Summer School, applied research, scientific publications and public events.

EUFOR will engage students, academics, researchers, territorial communities, public authorities, businesses, civil society organisations, and professionals from the forestry, environmental and agricultural sectors.

The professional training will address EU forestry methods for the renaturalisation of devastated territories. The Summer School will focus on European strategies for forest and land recovery in post-war Ukraine.

Turning Knowledge into Lasting Change

EUFOR will establish a bilingual digital platform providing open access to teaching materials, research findings, publications, videos and policy-oriented content. Its research will support the evidence-based adaptation of EU policies to Ukraine’s recovery needs and strengthen decision-making in environmental restoration.

The new courses will become part of the educational provision of Sumy National Agrarian University. This institutional integration will preserve the project’s results beyond its implementation period and connect EU policy, university education, research and the practical needs of Ukrainian communities.

EUFOR is built on a clear principle: Ukraine’s post-war recovery must be guided by scientific evidence, European standards and responsible natural resource management.
